Volunteer Spotlight—Avi Satlow
An Extraordinary Young Man!
Hi! My name is Avi Satlow and I am 15 years old. I am in ninth grade at the Crefeld School in Chestnut Hill, PA. In 2004 I worked on my first charity project, which was suggested by my mom. We cooked and served Thanksgiving dinner in a Philadelphia shelter. My interests include poker, math, and doing charity work. My first experience thinking about fairness in the world was in kindergarten when I learned about Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks.

On December 23 and 24, 2008, Avi Satlow, 15, gathered 23 dedicated volunteers to prepare and deliver 117 kosher dinners for needy people living in Brith Sholom House and the Pavilion, in Philadelphia. The Mitzvah Food Project provided the contact lists of needy individuals. The delivery team included Avi’s mom & dad, sister Tali, grandfather, a teacher from school, and friends with their families.
On those December days, the Satlow kitchen was a hub of frenetic activity for nine hours as eight turkey breasts were cooked, 20 cans of cranberry sauce were opened and mashed, and over 50 pounds of peaches went into peach cobbler. Each meal also included corn bread, mashed potatoes, stuffing, peas, a chocolate chip cookie, a small bag of candy treats, and a separate container of macaroni and cheese. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich was added for good measure. All of the food and cooking materials were purchased and paid for by Avi, using funds earned through fundraisers and his weekly allowance.
Each person must live their life as a model for others.
--Rosa Parks
Avi organized this event as part of his ongoing commitment to community service, which began in 2004. Over the last five years, he and his supporters have prepared and served more than 1400 meals. At his bar mitzvah in 2007, Avi set a goal of preparing and serving meals monthly at The Mary Jane Enrichment Center, a shelter in North Philadelphia. In addition, he has supported the Maternity Care Coalition of Philadelphia (for which he was honored as an outstanding supporter in 2006), and the Francisvale Home for Smaller Animals in Radnor. Effective and efficient, Avi also raises money and awareness through yard sales, casino nights, and milestone events. For all the info, check out http://home.comcast.net/~absatlow/site/
