The Jewish Federation manages the largest pool of endowment and endowment-related assets within the Greater Philadelphia Jewish community, totaling more than $300 million, and distributes grants of more than $20 million annually from restricted, unrestricted and donor advised funds. The Director of Endowments and Planned Giving is responsible for enhancing and strengthening the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia’s current and future endowments and long-term philanthropic investments.
Reporting to the Executive Vice President, the Director of Endowments and Planned Giving is responsible for the direction and oversight of all functions related to endowments, bequests, donor advised funds, charitable gift annuities, and other philanthropic vehicles used by the Jewish Federation for the benefit of the donors and the community.
- Design and implement a robust plan to identify and create endowment strategies and opportunities for donors to make long-term philanthropic investments to ensure the future of our Jewish community.
- Cultivate, negotiate, and secure a wide range of planned giving vehicles including charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder and lead trusts, testamentary trusts, gifts of life insurance, and bequest intentions that will substantially contribute to the Jewish Federation’s future endowment.
- Partner and collaborate with the Financial Resources Development (FRD) team to integrate planned giving into overall donor strategies. Oversee the identification and cultivation of donors and donor prospects with a focus on endowment funding and planned giving.
- Provide oversight and leadership for multi-year Endowments Campaign.
- Implement strategic and operational goals for endowments, including integration of data, donor stewardship and gift counting within the central FRD systems and procedures.
- Establish and sustain strong working relationships with key advisors in the financial and legal communities.
- Manage a portfolio of top prospects with capacity for planned and outright gifts and develop a comprehensive stewardship strategy for these prospects.
- Advise and assist prospective donors and their professional advisors in their charitable and estate planning efforts.
- Create long term strategies to increase the number of families with donor advised funds as both giving vehicles and donor stewardship tools. Educate and engage future generations by focusing on families with donor advised funds and restricted endowment funds to increase their giving to the Jewish community.
- Administer and oversee activities of the Endowments Committee, Insurance Committee and other lay leadership working to enhance endowment programming.
- Participate in local and national professional organizations and programs such as The Jewish Federations of North America’s (JFNA) Senior Advisory Council and the Investment.
- Enhance communications by educating donors and community members on all aspects of planned giving and endowments.
- Ensure operations of planned giving/endowment endeavors are conducted within stringent requirements of law and fiduciary duty.
- Direct and manage the operations of the Endowments Department, including fund distributions, annual budget and professional staff.
Competencies, Education and Prior Experience:
- Minimum of ten (10) years progressively responsible management experience in the areas of endowments and planned giving with expertise in estate planning, trust administration, or related experience with a knowledge of gift planning strategies, tax laws and planned giving software.
- A proven track record of securing significant planned gifts while successfully demonstrating leadership and effectiveness within a complex organization.
- Knowledge and understanding of law as it relates to charitable planning.
- A strong personal presence and outstanding relationship building skills.
- An effective and supportive communicator, able to inspire, influence and build credibility with lay leadership and donors.
- Possess professionalism, motivational and inter-personal skills to work effectively with senior level donors, lay leadership and staff.
- The ability to impart knowledge, develop skills and mentor staff.
- A personal commitment to American Jewish philanthropy is essential.
- A knowledge and understanding of the organized Jewish community, preferred.
- Bachelor of Arts required; a degree in law or a Master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
