LEONARD COHEN: POET, PROPHET AND A BROKEN HALLELUIAH – BEV COHEN
We will examine Cohen’s poetry and his singing/ songwriting career in light of his traditional Jewish upbringing in one of Montreal’s most important families. Leonard Norman Cohen (September 21, 1934 – November 7, 2016) was a Canadian singer-songwriter, poet and novelist. His work explored religion, politics, isolation, sexuality and personal relationships. Cohen was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “For six decades, Leonard Cohen revealed his soul to the world through poetry and song—his deep and timeless humanity touching our very core. Bev Cohen is professor emerita at Bucks County Community College. Currently, she is the Co-Director of the Philadelphia Region of Volunteers for Israel and helps direct the Prison Literacy Project at SCI Phoenix (formerly Graterford).
