SCIENCE V SOCIETY
NATALIE ISSER
SPONSORED BY CLAIRE TUCKMAN
Science explains how the world works through observation, experimentation and mathematics. However, it does not provide meaning or a value system for human behavior. It is the community that establishes morality through legend, literature, philosophy and religion As science develops new technology it poses unintended consequences that often challenge beliefs and conventions. Conflicts have occurred throughout history and in our own times as basic ideals face the need for reexamination because both knowledge and new technology alter existing social and political conditions. Too frequently the antagonism between science and society has resulted in grave injustice on both sides. This lecture will attempt to examine some of these issues. Natalie Isser is Professor Emerita of the Pennsylvania State University, where she taught history and Women’s Studies at the Abington campus. She has written two books about French anti-Semitism, and French public opinion and diplomacy during the Second Empire.
