In the early part of the 20th Century, Vilna, Lithuania was the Eastern European capital for Jewish culture, scholarship, and faith. Once called the “Jerusalem of the East,” Vilna was home to Fania Lewando, a pioneer in the emerging Jewish vegetarian movement, passionate culinary educator, owner of a kosher dairy restaurant, and author of The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook.
Join speaker Wendy Waxman on her journey of rediscovering the original Yiddish manuscript of this amazing cookbook and explore a piece of the forgotten history of Vilna’s Jewish community before World War II.
The afternoon will include a sampling of kosher refreshments from the cookbook itself.
Proceeds from this event will benefit JFCS’ Holocaust Survivors Support Services.
