Mehereta Baruch-Ron currently serves as Deputy Mayor of Tel Aviv, the first woman of Ethiopian heritage to serve in that capacity. Born in 1974 in Seramle — a village near Gondar, Ethiopia — she made aliyah in Operation Moses in 1984. In Israel, she studied at Youth Aliyah boarding schools and went on to complete a B.A. in Psychology and Human Service and graduate studies in Organizational Psychology from Haifa University. Before entering public office, Baruch-Ron was an actor, with a breakout role on television’s ‘The Ambassador.” Now, she holds the portfolios of social welfare and culture on the city council.
