The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia strongly condemns hate speech in our community and throughout the world. When anti-Semitic hate speech was expressed by Temple University Professor Marc Lamont Hill, we immediately took action with national and local partners. We have and will continue to condemn comments that reject the state of Israel and the Jewish connection to our homeland.

We mourn the loss of Rabbi Aaron Panken, z”l, the president of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, who was killed piloting a small aircraft in the Hudson Valley area of New York state this weekend.

“In a constellation of tremendous Jewish leaders, the star of Rabbi Panken shone forth especially bright,” said Jerry Silverman, President and CEO of the Jewish Federations of North America. “His authentic inclusive Judaism and extraordinary personal qualities were present in his commitment to his students and his passion for vibrant Jewish life. We pray that his family will be comforted among the mourners of Zion. His loss leaves a gaping hole in their and our lives. He was a dear friend, and he will be missed by all of us at Jewish Federations.”
