Adults aged 60 and older, both Jewish and non-Jewish, receive the support they need to live and thrive in their Northeast Philadelphia homes while staying connected to the community.

More than 65,000 of Philadelphia’s older adults live in this area. The neighborhood suffers from a lack of service providers, and its aging buildings are in need of maintenance and renovation, but the area remains vibrant and optimistic.

Why It Matters

A NORC is a community that has a large proportion of residents over 60 but was not specifically planned to meet the needs of older adults living on their own. The residents face various obstacles that make it hard for them to perform daily activities like shopping for food and taking care of their homes. Despite these challenges, they prefer to remain in their own homes.

How the NORC Works

This innovative initiative, operated by the Jewish Federation in partnership with Catholic Health Care Services, helps 1,600 older adults living within the ZIP codes of 19111, 19114, 19115, 19116, 19149 and 19152. The NORC provides home assessments, maintenance and repairs; chore services; transportation to medical appointments and grocery shopping; monthly lunch and learn gatherings; and friendly visits and phone calls.

NORC staff help clients access other critical community services like home-delivered meals and home care. A neighbor-helping-neighbor model moves this project beyond traditional social services, leveraging community resources to connect older adults to the services they need.
