PANAMA JEWISH COMMUNITY

Panama is home to the largest Jewish community in Central America, a vibrant and deeply integrated population with roots tracing back to the 16th century with the arrival of Conversos fleeing the Inquisitions. While early Jewish settlers often practiced their faith in secret, open Jewish life began to flourish in the 19th century.

Today, the community, estimated at 10,000 to 25,000 members, is predominantly Sephardic but also includes a significant Ashkenazi presence. Panama stands out as the only country outside of Israel to have had two Jewish presidents: Max Delvalle Levy-Maduro and Eric Arturo Delvalle Cohen-Henriquez.

The community thrives with multiple synagogues, a robust network of kosher restaurants and supermarkets, and various communal organizations. Jews in Panama are actively involved and highly successful in various sectors, including business, real estate, and politics, contributing significantly to the nation’s development. This strong integration, coupled with a generally tolerant societal environment, makes Panama a unique and welcoming haven for Jewish life.
