Following President Biden’s notification of Congress in August that his administration would be proceeding with arms sales to Israel, six separate Joint Resolutions of Disapproval were introduced in the Senate to block certain arms from reaching Israel. The Senate will vote on all six of these resolutions next week. 

This effort, led by a small group of senators, comes at a time when Israel is fighting for its survival. Since the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attack, Iran and its proxies have begun a multifront war against the Jewish state, launching attacks from across the Middle East, including from Iran, Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen and Iraq. Iran has itself, for the first time, directly attacked Israel twice over the last year, launching hundreds of ballistic missiles, rockets and drones at civilian population centers across the country. Additionally, Israel has faced a barrage of thousands of missiles and drones from Hezbollah in Lebanon, displacing tens of thousands of Israelis from their homes in the north of Israel. Furthermore, the Houthis in Yemen have launched drones towards Israel, and have been attacking both U.S. Navy ships and disrupting the flow of maritime trade.

Blocking these arms sales to Israel not only puts Israel at greater risk of being attacked by its enemies, but also serves to weaken the strength of the US-Israel military alliance as they face growing threats in the Middle East. These resolutions only serve to embolden Israel and America’s shared adversaries. As stated in the official notification of the sales, “The United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to U.S. national interests to assist Israel to develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defense capability.” Advancing these resolutions not only undermines Israel’s qualitative military edge, but also undermines the president’s support for our democratic ally.
