Jewish Federation seeks to hire someone for the position of DIRECTOR OF KEHILLOT. The Kehillot (Hebrew for “communities”) are the eight geographic regions within the Jewish Federation’s five-county catchment area. The Federation Kehillah funding supports a coalition of lay and professional leadership in each region, and supports grass-roots community building efforts within each region. This staff person will:

  • manage the program’s alignment with Federation’s overall goals
  • be in regular communication with the coordinators of each Kehillah and respond to the challenges they need assistance with
  • ensure that regular data collection and analysis occurs
  • engage with the Kehillot’s volunteer leadership as appropriate
  • steward the Federation’s Community Engagement Committee working on strategy
  • developing tools for strengthening work with under-represented populations

We intend to hire a professional with 10+ years of program and committee management experience who will in turn report to a Federation professional with deep knowledge of the program and the players, the Senior Director of Leadership Development and Engagement.

Major responsibilities for this position include

  • Serve as the central point of contact and task manager for eight, part-time Kehillah Coordinators who work throughout Greater Philadelphia as grassroots community organizers.
  • Serve as Jewish Federation’s representative to the volunteer leadership of eight Jewish Community Coalitions.
  • Provide Jewish Federation messaging and resources to Kehillot Coordinators and volunteer leadership to ensure consistent and effective representation of the organization’s objectives.
  • Oversite of a $300k grant, including data collection and the preparation of semi-annual evaluation reports. Work with Jewish Federation’s evaluation team on data analysis as needed.
  • Staff the Community Engagement Committee, a Jewish Federation volunteer body that assists with setting engagement strategy for the Kehillot, with a special emphasis on strengthening our work with under-represented populations.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with Jewish Federation’s development colleagues to share leads and work towards organization-wide objectives.

Successful candidates for this position will have the following skills, abilities and experiences

  • General and business knowledge equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree with 10+ years of progressive experiences in community services programming and general management of larger, sophisticated local community-based nonprofit charitable organizations that rely heavily upon volunteer support from the communities they serve for their success.
  • Familiarity with the contemporary American Jewish communal landscape. Knowledge of the Greater Philadelphia Jewish community is preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with staff, volunteers and community stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic and tactical plans.
  • Proven organizational, analytical and planning skills.
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to move from over-arching objectives to specific and actionable tactics.
  • Proven ability to relate to a diverse audience
  • Awareness of group and organizational dynamics
  • Proven ability to work with peers in a collaborative environment
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Access to a car
