The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia applauds Representatives Brendan Boyle and Brian Fitzpatrick for voting to reject the reckless and irresponsible amendment to H.R. 8595 drafted by Rep. Thomas Massie that would have eliminated all U.S. security assistance, including crucial defensive funding, to Israel.
This proposal failed to distinguish between offensive and defensive capabilities, including lifesaving missile defense systems that protect Israeli civilians from terrorist attacks. Just as importantly, it would have signaled to Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, and other Iranian-sponsored terrorist organizations that America’s longstanding commitment to Israel’s security is wavering. At a time of escalating threats across the region, such a message would have weakened deterrence, emboldened Israel’s adversaries, and undermined America’s strategic interests.
We are grateful to Representatives Boyle and Fitzpatrick for demonstrating principled leadership, supporting Israel’s security, and recognizing that continued U.S. security assistance to Israel is essential to the security of our closest ally in the Middle East and advances America’s strategic interests.
