You can be a part of a movement that is building relationships, taking meaningful action and strengthening ties between the Black and Jewish communities.

aBOUT The New Golden Age

The New Golden Age is a partnership between the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and Culture Changing Christians to bring together the Jewish and Black communities to combat hate, enhance security, and strengthen the region’s social safety net.

As part of the work of the Jewish Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) and its Center to Combat Antisemitism, the New Golden Age coalition of civically-minded volunteers and professionals meet regularly to identify and address shared issues, and fortify strong relationships.

Our Shared History

During the Civil Rights Movement, these communities stood united against hate and bigotry. At that time, ties between Black and Jewish organizations deepened, fueling shared endeavors driven by values centered around inclusive change, individual rights, and government responsibility for equal opportunity.

Shaping Our Future, Together

The New Golden Age initiative revives the spirit of the “Golden Age” of the Civil Rights movement when the Black and Jewish communities put their lives on the line for one another.

Members of the coalition meet on a monthly basis for dialogue and planning. Other activities include hosting town halls, service projects, and advocacy trips to Harrisburg and Washington D.C.

KEY Priority Areas

The initiative is rooted in meaningful dialogue and advocacy work to build understanding and unity, guided by three key priority areas.

The initiative works to rebuild and repair the symbolic bridge built by the Black and Jewish communities, reminiscent of the one crossed in Selma, Alabama. Both communities meet monthly to discuss ways to combat racism and antisemitism.

The alliance works to bolster public safety measures to reduce violence in Greater Philadelphia. The group participates in Philadelphia City Council sessions and meets with lawmakers in Harrisburg and on Capitol Hill to advocate for measures such as increased funding for violence prevention groups, fortified hate crime legislation, and support of economic advancement for underprivileged communities.

To ensure that communities have the support and resources needed to thrive, the New Golden Age provides access to food and safe living, quality senior services, equitable employment and entrepreneurial opportunities. The group regularly participates in Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service and discusses shared issues to advocate on.
